The University of California has several agreements with moving companies with discounts about 40% or more. The prices are more likely to remain fixed in an industry that tends to increase. Discounted insurance and in-transit storage rates have been negotiated on moved items. Some insurance is offered at no additional charge on some agreements. The vendor accepts the University's terms and conditions, which provides the University with greater protection.

Moving to San Francisco

Contact UCSF's local moving company representative listed above. Ask them to arrange to have an agent provide a move estimate at the departure site. If a moving company in another state has been contacted, ask them whether they're an agent for one of the above companies. If they are, explain that our local agent will contact them. Contact your local agent and request that they contact the out-of-state agent to coordinate the move.

Let the Relocation Wizard create a timeline for your move.

Moving from San Francisco

Contact the moving company's local agent. Explain that you're using the agreement, and ask whether they will move to your destination location. Retirees are eligible to use moving agreements.

Provide the mover with the following:

  • Departure address
  • Destination addresses
  • Packing date
  • Loading date
  • Delivery date

Insurance Coverage

Moved items are usually insured by weight (i.e. $3.00/lb) unless you make other arrangements. Please consider requesting Replacement Coverage or specifying a Dollar Value for the Load.

Commonly Requested Services

UCSF departments request:

  • packing items
  • loading items
  • delivering items to local storage or final destination
  • unloading and unpacking heavy items (mattresses, china barrels, dish packs, mirrors, wardrobes)
  • door to door pickup and delivery of car on car carrier
  • removal and disposal of debris (the packing materials and cardboard boxes) at packing site and delivery site

Shuttle

If a 40 foot semi-trailer truck (semi) can't get to the new house, you may need a shuttle. A shuttle is a small van that moves easily through San Francisco's narrow, steep streets. Ask the mover to tell you whether a shuttle will be required for your move by viewing a map from your departure to destination.

Unidentified Destination

In-transit storage is often used when items have to be packed and moved from the departure location, but an arrival location hasn't been identified. You can request that movers mark some items for local (bay area) storage, and deliver other items, such as clothes and cooking utensils, to temporary housing.

Travelling

While you're making travel plans, don't forget that there are also systemwide agreements on car rentals, air travel, furniture rental, and hotel room rentals. http://www.ucop.edu/purchserv/travelinfo.html
